Attorney Alpern Speaks About "Caring For Parents"
4/28/2008

Attorney Jack N. Alpern spoke at the invitation of PBS Channels 45 & 49, "Caring For Your Parents" workshop, co-sponsored by Summa Health Care of Akron.

The workshop was the local response of Channels 45 & 49 to the nationally telecast series using the same title which the stations carried.

Attorney Alpern's topic, "Nursing Home Costs: How to Plan for Nursing Home Care," he spoke about the toll in which the cost of nursing homes can take on your assets. Attorney Alpern said, "Nursing home costs are the single biggest threat to leaving any inheritance to your heirs when you pass away." He emphasized that having long-term care insurance or gifting assets to children during lifetime may be the only remaining solution for this problem.

Attorney Alpern's presentation may be viewed in its entirety at http://www.pbs4549.org/caringforyourparents/nursinghome.htm

Attorney Alpern's firm, The Alpern Law Firm, concentrates on estate planning and elder law and has offices in Warren, Youngstown and East Liverpool.

 What is Division of Assets?

Division of Assets is the name commonly used for the Spousal Impoverishment provisions of the Medicare Catastrophic Act of 1988. It applies only to married couples. The intent of the law was to change the eligibility requirements for Medicaid in situations where one spouse needs nursing home care while the other spouse remains in the community (i.e. at home or in an assisted living facility). The law, in effect, recognized that it makes little sense to impoverish both spouses when only one needs to qualify for Medicaid assistance for nursing home care.
